Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry is one of the most original names I’ve encountered regarding bars in the area. I’ve got to give them credit for having Bell’s Two Hearted Ale on tap. Unfortunately, that’s about as far as the good credit goes in this curd blog.
I was attracted to this place after reading a four square article ranking the top 15 places to get cheese curds in Madison. I’ll provide the link here: https://foursquare.com/top-places/madison/best-places-cheese-curds . Dotty’s ranked 8th and I have a hard time even considering them in the top 15. Here’s why:
Presentation: 2 – It was a basket of cheese curds within another basket. That’s extra work for the server and it leads the patron to believe that they should be getting more curd. This isn’t fine wine….you don’t need to let the curd breathe.
Look at the this HUGE WICKER BASKET….in its past life, it held quilts or maybe a peck of apples.
Breading and Batter: 2 – The breading was light and similar to that found at The Old Fashioned. It was just kind of….well….bland.
Flavor: 1 – This cheese curd had about as much taste as a lukewarm communion wafer.
Curd: 3 – The look of this curd was nice with good shape variety.
Cost: 2 – It was $7 which is the market average around here.
Sauce: 3 – I must say that the ranch was the best tasting part of this dish.
Overall: 2.2
These curds were average to below average. I don’t doubt that the burger at Dotty’s is tasty. The bar itself has unique character and I’d recommend it to anyone looking to unwind with friends, a few pints and a bite to eat.
